Old WesleyDale Heritage Self Contained Accommodation in Mole Creek Tasmania |
|
Old WesleyDale![]() is a rural property in Northern Tasmania steeped in early European settlement history. The house and outbuildings are of Early Georgian architecture giving an insight into the trials confronted by the early pioneers.
The days of early settlement are full remarkable characters, but none more enterprising than Henry Reed. He came to Launceston in 1827. and took up land and developed several properties in the northern parts of the island.
He became a merchant and diversified into shipping and whaling. His Ships played an important part in the exploration of Southern Australia and the supply of the settlement at Port Phillip.
How Henry Reed came to be drawn to the beautiful valley tucked in below the Western Tiers is not recorded, but in 1836, Henry became the owner of the tract of land he was to name 'Old WesleyDale'.
From this time much development took place, beginning with the completion of the homestead and then the building of the farm complex .It consisted of a square compound of one measured acre bounded by a massive stone wall ten feet high and two feet thick. Inside the huge barn, with its gun -slot windows, Henrys fine imported cattle were well protected from aboriginal tribes and bushrangers.
![]() The stone accommodation building was originally the 'dairy' building, in which the making of the cream and cheese took place. The exposed beams are all morticed, pegged and fitted, are all original and during the renovation all the old cobbles were uncovered. We invite guests to explore this unique chapter in history with the spectacular backdrop of the Great Western Tiers.
